Commissioning Illustrations

I am a full time freelance artist available for commission illustration. This short guide will give you an indication of what to expect when I work for you.

What do I illustrate?

I am available to illustrate full colour picture books but I can also be commissioned for other endeavours. I can help to create life in your blog by adding illustrations to your posts. I have had illustrations published in Teddy Bear Times magazine and would like to illustrate for more magazines articles. I also take on commission work for individual illustrations.

Do you need a children’s book illustrator?

You have written your book, what do you do next? Choosing an illustrator can be difficult, in fact it can feel impossible to find an illustrator who fits your style and your budget but it can be done! I am a full time illustrator and take on commission work for authors, established and just starting out. I offer affordable packages but the most important thing is that you like my style and feel like it can fit with your story so please look at as much of my work on this website and social media as you can.

You can find the most up to date examples of my work and work in progress on instagram.

So you like my work? What now?

Firstly, thank you! Send me a message with your requirements, I need to know how many pages, what size you would like your illustrations and when you will need them done by. I always respond to enquiries within a few days of receiving an email from you. This reply will include a quote for the illustrations that you have asked for.

Prices start at £50.00 for spot illustrations, suitable for blogs, social media, publications etc. Full pages begin at £100.00 per page and cover art at £250.00. I am open to discussing your budget and how we can best work within it so please contact me and we can have a chat about your project.

If you are happy with the quote then I will read your story, get a few rough sketches done and an idea of the character design and storyboard before I begin the actual illustrations.  I will then begin the illustrations in pencil, I will send you images at this stage and you can ask for minor adjustments which I will make before the colouring begins. I will then colour the images, scan them in, clean them up and send them to you in high resolution files, you should ensure you have an external hard drive to save them on because they are big files.

The original artwork will remain with me as will copyright of the illustrations however the copyright for the story (text) will remain with you.

Email me or use the form below to discuss your ideas further.

Party Poopers by Jill Young

Samantha provided the cover artwork and nine illustrations for my book and I can’t recommend her work highly enough. The pictures are wonderful and were delivered ahead of the promised timescale. I was kept fully informed throughout the process and my requests for alterations along the way were met with endless patience.

As well as the illustrations, Samantha was an invaluable source of advice and support as I worked my way through the self-publishing maze for the first time. She provided very constructive feedback, smoothing the process on numerous occasions.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Samantha and I hope I get the opportunity to do so again in the future.” – Jill Young, Party Poopers
